John Merrill is a Manchester-based artist whose work is mainly photographic.

In a former life he was a psychiatrist.

Graduating from Manchester School of Art with an MA in Photography (distinction) he was shortlisted for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries before embarking upon a PhD by practice which explored fundamental principles of the science of vision.

The panoply of work he has produced has been influenced by movements as diverse as surrealism, pop art and conceptualism.  

His work has been exhibited at the Liverpool International Photography Exhibition and throughout the UK.

 He was artist in residence with the Manchester Modernist Society, documenting the 50th anniversary of the iconic Toastrack building.

He was one of ten artists from Greater Manchester selected for bOlder, a Castlefield Gallery-led development program for contemporary visual artists aged over 50.
